In plumes of smoke of dingy gray
Our innocence wafted away
Above the hole that violence bore
There on the Potomac’s shore
Now, still the tears begin to well
At thoughts of how those towers fell
While shards of paper wafted down
Like snow upon a frozen ground
Then in a quiet grassy field
Metal crashed, then sirens peeled
A dirge to honor countless brave
Who gave their all for others saved
Our heroes rose and heroes fell
As we wept tears that would not quell
But still we knew their hate had failed
As love remained and hope prevailed
Christy,
What a poignant reflection.

Your poem captures the horror of this tragedy as well as the deep emotional response that still lingers. But as you rightly expressed, love and hope have triumphed! Well done. — Your Dad

Dear Birdie:
Please send this to Sue Giovanni at Sacred Heart in honor of Billy Hunt!
All day when I wrote 9/11/ it reminded me of your call and your telling us that you were watching the Pentagon burn! I remember putting on the TV and thinking that it was somekind of movie that it just couldn’t be real! My friend Judy’s son and daughter in law got out of the 2nd tower in time and we spoke today of some of the feelings she had until she knew that they were safe. Cousin Anne Page also lived close by to the towers at the time and had her apartment damaged when they fell. I remember her description of the towers falling, the people and all that went on that day! Your poem captures someone with a first hand account of the pain, suffering and resilence of our people!
